  Actual and Former Members of the Lab      
    œTakashi Yano took a position as a research assistant for the Faculty of Engineering, Kumamoto University, in 1976. He worked under the supervision of late Professor Asato Kobayashi, assisting him in his lectures and studying the effects of noise. In 1988 he earned the degree of Doctor of Engineering from Osaka University. In 1989 he was appointed Associate Professor and in 1997 full Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Kumamoto University. His research is focused on community response to noise.  
    œ Dr. Keiji Kawai took a position as a research associate for the laboratory in 1996. He is engaged in education on environmental engineering and carries out research on public acoustics together with Professor Takashi Yano.  
     

œ Dr. James M. Fields, USA, was invited as a visiting professor from October 1998 to September 1999. He was engaged with lectures for undergraduate and graduate students and carried out an international joint study on the construction of standardized noise annoyance scales .

 
   

œ After Professor Emeritus Yoichi Ando had retired from Kobe University in 2003, he moved to Kirishima. He still carries out several research projects as a research fellow of Professor Yano's laboratory.

 
   

œ Dr. Katja Wirth Buergel from Switzerland was invited as a visiting research fellow. She graduated at Fribourg University, Switzerland, in 1999 and earned her doctoral degree at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in 2004. At Kumamoto University, she is engaged in a cross-cultural study on community response to aircraft noise. She is here for one year, from October 2005 to September 2006.
