ABOUT US

II Major activities

(1) Education

The research and teaching activities persued by our laboratory are dedicated to architectural environmental engineering, particularly architectural lighting and color design, as well as architectural acoustics. The lectures are as following:

Undergraduate Studies

Architectural lighting and color design

Architectural acoustics

Practice in architectural environmental engineering

Graduate thesis

Master Course

Architectural environmental engineering

Socio-environmental engineering

Psycho-environmental engineering

Practice in environmental engineering

Master thesis

Doctoral Studies

Socio-cultural environmental engineering

Doctoral thesis

(2) Research

Our research is mainly focused on acoustics. We are interested in the following three fields:

Social acoustics : community response to noise; noise policy

Concert hall acoustics : blending science and art

Public acoustics : soundscape and its application

(3) Requirements for graduate students

Graduate students must present their research outcomes at domestic and international congresses and publish articles in congress proceedings and scientific journals. In addition, they have to earn credit points.

First grade master course students

First grade master course students are required to present their research at a small domestic meeting, i.e., at a meeting of the Architectural Institute of Japan, Kyushu Branch, or at a meeting of the Acoustical Society of Japan, Kyushu Branch.

Second grade master course students

Second grade master course students are obligated to present their research outcomes at a large domestic meeting, i.e., at the annual meeting of the Architectural Institute of Japan, at the national meeting of the Acoustical Society of Japan, or at the meeting of the Research Committee of the Acoustical Society of Japan.

PhD students

PhD students have to present their research at least once at an international congress, i.e., at the International Congress on Noise Control Engineering (Internoise), at the International Congress on Acoustics (ICA), at Forum Acusticum, or at the International Congress on Noise as a Public Health Problem (ICBEN). At least two publications in peer-reviewed journals are required, such as in the Journal of Environmental Engineering (Transactions of AIJ), the Journal of the Acoustical Society of Japan, Acoustical Science and Technology, the Journal of Sound and Vibration, or the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.
