[I] Noise Studies
(1) Noise Study in Vietnam
Background:
In European and American countries, a great
deal of social surveys on community response
to traffic noise have been conducted. In
Asian countries, except Japan, few data
on traffic noise effects have been collected.
No such data exist in Vietnam. Vietnam,
however, is now in rapid economic growth
and has serious environmental problems,
such as water, air, and noise pollution,
caused by traffic and industry. In order
to taggle these problems, scientific data
are needed. Particularly data on community
response to noise are strongly required,
in order to develop a national noise policy.

Purpose:
Our research projects in Vietnam aim to assess
community response to transportation noise. A
subsequent goal is to propose a noise policy in
Vietnam. The research projects are carried out
in collaboration with Hanoi University of Civil
Engineering.
Construction of a standardized noise
annoyance scale in Vietnamese (2002):
A standardized noise annoyance scale was constructed,
using the method proposed by ICBEN Team 6. (Reference)
Preliminary survey on community response
to road traffic noise in Hanoi (2004):
A small-scale survey was conducted in Hanoi, using
the above mentioned standardized annoyance scale.

Large-scale social survey on community
response to road traffic noise in Hanoi (2005):
Socio-acoustical surveys were carried out in seven
areas of Hanoi with high traffic noise levels.
The sample size was more than 1500.
Social surveys on community response
to road traffic noise in suburbs of Hanoi (2006):
We plan to carry out another socio-acoustical
survey in quieter areas of Hanoi, in order to
complete our data base and to obtain a clear dose-response
curve.
Psychoacoustic experiment on the effects
of klaxon sounds on annoyance (2007):
Road traffic noise in Vietnam is characterized
by klaxon sounds. The effects of klaxon sounds
have not yet been systematically investigated.
Thus, we plan to carry out a study on the effects
of horn sound.
Social survey on community response
to aircraft noise around Tan Son Nhat Airport
(2008): Tan Son Nhat Airport is the busiest
airport in Vietnam, and noise pollution around
the airport is very serious. The government considers
to construct a new airport. We plan to carry out
a social survey before and after the opening of
the new airport. Several research projects carried
out in Europe and America have evidenced that
after a abrupt change of the noise level, the
residents show overreactions. It will be very
interesting to investigate if in Asia this overreaction
can be found, too. (Photos)
Proposal of a noise policy in Vietnam:
Based on our research data colleted in Vietnam,
we hope to be able to develop proposals for an
effective noise policy in Vietnam.
